Cautiously Optimistic...

Okay I took the plunge, I weighed myself this morning. I wasn't going to, I was thinking of not weighing myself until I left for Vegas November 2nd. I really didn't want to step on the scale, then I thought that I would never know where I was and what I lost. I weighed 189.2 lbs. Yes, I weighed long enough to not be over 190 lbs. Had I weighed myself after the beer run I'm sure it would have been north of 190, perhaps even way north. I think I may just weigh myself every Wednesday.

Last night when I went to bed I tried to roll my calf with the stick and it was so tender I could only roll it ultra lightly. I took my protein shake before bed, I heard drinking it before bed is one of the best time, it helps the body heal itself as you sleep. It must have helped, when I rolled the Achilles area when I woke up it wasn't as tender, it still hurts, just not as tender. I started the day walking with a limp and by noon I could walk without one, albeit, it's still tender. I find that it is beneficial to try and walk through the pain when you can, it helps stretch out the muscle.

I had an 11 am meeting at work today with one of the companies sales managers regarding some shipping advice he needed. I woke up at the crack of 9am and had a wardrobe choice, do I were pants and shoes or shorts and flip flops. I went for the shorts and flip flops. What the hell, they needed me for my brains not dress code. I actually laughed earlier in the year when human resources sent a memo that it is important that people wear appropriate footwear, especially in the plant, I wore my flip flops all year and walked through the back plant many a time.

When I got home it was 2 pm and I made myself some lunch and then went out for a ride. It was a scheduled tempo ride and I had to mentally prepare myself for it. Without training for Kona or Clearwater, I've lost motivation to do my tempo rides at full throttle up to 143 bpm, it can hurt. Today, even with a sore calf I went for it. I did 90 minutes and averaged 140 bpm. I did not mail this workout in. All I could think about was representing Canada in 65 days and wanting to make sure I come at my best, no regrets. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't easy, it wasn't enjoyable until I got home.

After relaxing, eating dinner and watching the final DVD of Kenny Powers season two I decided to go to the gym, I wanted to see if my chest could take some weights. At worst I thought I could at least do legs only. I was also thinking that I can still swim, I could do entire workouts of kicking. My kicking sucks and it couldn't hurt just doing kicks. I don't want let my injury give me an excuse for not going to the pool.

I did surprisingly well in the gym. For the upper body I lowered the weight about 25% and cranked the weight to the max on the legs. It was actually harder on my chest doing the leg exercises and taking deep breaths to push the weight than it was on the lighter upper body weights.

After the gym session I'm actually thinking that the chest may not be as bad as I thought. I'm going to go for a swim tomorrow and that will be the test. If I can do it then fireman Bob needs to hit the gym, his punch needs some work (haha). In the end it may not effect my training for the worlds at all, I'll still be able to get all my workouts in this week, except for some of the running.

The one thing I know for a fact is weights help injuries, they help stretch and build muscle. I'm also finding that I recover from injuries quicker now than ever before and I'm not sure if it's because I stop early when it flairs up or I ease back into training gently or my body is just better at healing. I've got to think the Tissue Rejeventor is helping also.

I was looking at half Ironman races to do before the Worlds and saw that there is one in the Pocono's near Philadelphia, about a 6 hour drive from my house. The date is October 2nd. The only issue that I see is the weather, that time of year the weather is between 44 F - 66 F. Whoever decided to have a race that time of year is insane or an Eskimo who thinks that temperature is still warm. Even Canadians wouldn't have a race that time of year. Either way, I'm serious about doing it, it might be an epically cold race. The deciding factor will be how my body feels and if training is going well and barring any injury. If all goes well I'm going to do it. I also love the word Pocono's. If anyone wants to do it with me let me know.

For the Worlds I think I'm going to adjust my schedule again. I cut all the workouts down slightly from Ironman distance training. I'm going to change it to have the swim and runs the exact same distance and if I was training for an Ironman and just cut the bike ride distance down, maybe my longest ride being 5 hours and most long runs in the 4 hour range.

I got the itinerary for the Worlds and there is some discrepancies. The race website says the distance is 120 km bike and the awards ceremony is on Saturday after the race. The Triathlon Canada site says the awards are on Sunday and the bike is 130 km. The Triathlon Canada site also says there is going to be a group ride on Nov 2nd, I arrive on November 2nd. If that's the case I'm going to change my flight. I originally booked my flights to miss the least amount of work, now I'm second guessing my choice. I'm thinking an extra day before the race to acclimatize and get a good nights sleep in the Nevada time zone will be more beneficial.

Tomorrow is my pampering day, I booked a massage with my favourite masseuse, Sara. She is good. It will be one hour to work my legs and calf. I often tell them to spend no time on my upper body. I'm hoping I'll be ready to start running again by the weekend.

The photo of the day is Doru's knee from his fight with Al on the trampoline. Al was telling me that when he got home his shirt was all full of blood as he barbecued at his house for the kids hockey party. Big Watermelon head Al barbecuing with blood on him like some big thug. I wonder if he scared the kids or other parents. I bet no one complained about his food.

Injury Management...

Second day in a row eating well. Winning!!!

However it wasn't a perfect day. I rode a couple hours before dinner and later in the night went for a run and around the 15 minute mark the area above my Achilles started to get tight. I tried to run through it and did my usual mind games telling my brain to pump blood to the area. Very often this works and five minutes later I'm fine.

I was thinking of phoning a friend to pick me up when it happened, instead I didn't call Alice until the 30 minute mark. It wasn't going away and I didn't want to injure it further.

There is aways a cause of an injury. I think this one could have been due to lack of water. This past weekend was a lot of dehydration and today I didn't drink as much water as I should have. Even on the bike I took 3 water bottles and drank most of them, I was very thirsty. This morning I only had one glass of water and at work I had none, not even when I ate my lunch.

The other problem it could be is running at a heavier weight and putting more stress on it. I could also be an electrolyte deficiency or stress. My back was slightly tight today. I do find that when I'm a little heavier it throws my body posture out of whack and that could have possibly caused it. I've only done about 22 km's over the last couple weeks since Steelhead. Not good, body needs to keep in motion to prevent injury. Either way, they are all areas I have control over.

Prior to my run I pulled out one of the first years blog book. I wanted to see what side my chest got kicked and rib bruised and how long it took for it to heal well enough to get back in the pool. Last time it happened on the same side, the left and it took approximately 20 days until I got into the pool. I was able to lift light weights prior. I do think it was worse last time. I may try the pool this week, a very light swim. Last time it was good up to 2500 meters 3 days after being kicked and I was swimming at 1:33 per hundred and injured it further. Having the blog book to look back on is definitely a benefit.

When I got home from my run the pain moved down closer to my Achilles and really stiffened up. I did some stretching, iced it with a bag of pees, took some vitamins and then massaged it with the stick and took some whey protein before bed to help rebuild muscle. I'm also taking the Canadian banned tissue rejuevenator. The one thing about being an athlete is injury management, it comes with the territory.

Interestingly, in 2008 after getting kicked in the chest, within a week I injured my calf and then I got drunk at Johnny's house and fell down the stairs bruising my back pretty severely. I definitely have a history of being my own worst enemy when it comes to injuries. No wonder I'm decent at treating injury.

I also realized my posts were a lot shorter in 2008, I was 177lbs, thanks to having my tonsils out and I still drank a lot of beer. Talking about beer I figured we drank close to 250 beers during the beer run and over the balance of the day and night. That's based on the run itself and draining the Kegerator, then drinking from bottles and cans. The smell of the empty beer cans from the recycle bin proves it, it's sure stinking up the garage, it smells like a brewery.

And a new Chapter begins...

First off if you're looking for a few laughs, check out the following blogs regarding the House of Payne Beer Run....Great stuff.

Rodney Buike - http://tlog.dortoh.ca/2011/08/28/just-dont-puke/

Today was the day of my start to eat healthy, train hard and lose some weight for the Long Course World Championships November 5th, just 67 days a week. I've said it many a time that I'm going to eat healthy and lose weight and the best I do is 5 - 7 lbs, usually stopping at 181 - 185 lbs.

This time is different, I want to prove I can do it, I can get down to under 170 lbs for this race. The sweetest number I can think of is 168 lbs. I don't know why, it's just a number that keep coming into my head as an awesome weight number.

To me if I can't keep motivated for the Worlds there is nothing outside of AIDS that will get me to lose some weight. For these past 5 years I've had good results racing between 180 - 189 lbs. For these past 5 years I've had good results racing and not eating healthy. For these past 5 years I've had good results racing without curtailing my beer and cigar smoking. For these past 5 years I've had good results by training hard. I can't do any better on the training, except to increase my swim workouts. My training has been the consistent factor.

My question is what could I do if I continued to train hard and lived the straight and narrow lifestyle of healthy eating and no beer and cigars, ultimately losing weight and showing up at the best weight and the best shape of my life?

The course in Vegas is very hard, Davis said it looks much tougher than the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, more hilly. Every advanced cyclist or triathlete I've talked to says weight makes a big difference when climbing hills. I've got to believe them. Matty Reid told me I won't lose my flats speed and power if I get lighter, that's always been a fear.

Today was the day I started my journey and I'm proud to say I succeeded. My first day is in the books and I ate well. As part of the journey I'm counting my calories on My Plate, today I ate 1885. The food I'm eating is no magic formula, we all know the good stuff. I'm eating proteins and carbs and in many ways following what my body is craving. Today it was craving pasta with olive oil, garlic and some Parmesan cheese for dinner.

The biggest thing about eating healthy to lose weight is to stop late night snacking. I know this from experience. The number one function of the body is to digest food, the number two function is to repair the body. If the body is constantly digesting food it delays the repairing of everything else. By not snacking past dinner, your giving your body time to repair itself. Once it repairs it's self it will also start naturally start losing weight until you hit your natural plateau.

In my case the repair process needs to happen, I've got some liver and kidney organs that need to cleanses themselves and my chest needs to repair itself. The chest felt about 5 % better today. It's definitely a bruised rib, I've had one before and I know exactly what it feels like. It's going to be a 4 - 6 week healing process. The worst thing I can do is swim or do upper body weights, it will make it worse. I was feeling great this morning until I had a shower and just washing my hair and drying myself off made it worse. I'm glad it did, it reminded me that I can't push it. The last time I had this it felt fine until 10 minutes into a swim and wham it got worse by a factor of 10, so much so that I thought the rib was broken until I got it x-rayed.

Bob sent me an email today feeling so bad about the rib. It's not his fault. I was asking for it, even the kids were teasing me that I don't know when to stop. Then they said why would you egg on a fire fighter, those guys are strong, you're nuts. True, I've felt it. Although I am proud to say I took the shot from one strong MoFo without flinching and there was a loud heat sinking missile "Thud", just ask Alice and Matty O. Excessive beer drinking causes you to do all sorts of stupid things. You think I'd have learnt my lesson by now.

I am also proud that I was able to drag two men at the same time, grabbing one arm of each and pulling 400 lbs of meat across my basement floor. I pulled one with one arm, then the other with the other arm until I got them out of harms way. The motivation was we in the foxhole pretending were going to own a restaurant together and they were the guys running the grill and stuff. They got shot, with them dead I'd have to work hard, hence the super human strength. Alice said today that their toenails were probably worn down. Again, amazing was beer can do. I'm like Popeye, my spinach is beer. I will say that was a highlight. Next feat next year is I'm going to bench press a small car.

Aside from my chest feeling sore, I feel most pain for Bob, I know he's beating the shit out of himself for doing it right now. Bob I know you're reading this, stop, all's good, definitely no hard feelings on my part, forget about it and get back to your training with a clear mind, you've got Ironman Florida coming up in November. I don't want to train thinking you're beating yourself up for something I encouraged. If you did it unsolicited then that would be another story.

Today I spent recovering and putting together The House of Payne Beer Run video. There was tons of great photo's and footage. Just putting it together had me reliving it. This year I think the run itself was the best ever. I think the key to setting the tone was the announcer, Beavis and Butthead, the Cup, the Costumes, great weather and the most amount of veterans ever. Plus the fact that I won. Thank goodness Heather didn't go with here last years time that she was going to go with, she would have only been 1 second off. Now that I won once I look forward to others winning. Needless to say the day after the run I ordered the tulip for the side of the trophy with my name on it. It's amazing how this race had progressed and we just had our 4th race. It seemed like yesterday that Jay Yakabowich and I were sitting in the Pig & Whistle and came up with the idea. Jay wanted to do a 10 km run, I convinced him differently.

Aside from working from home I prepared my next 10 weeks training schedule. I had to make some adjustments from my Ironman training mileage. The bike and the run is a little shorter than a full Ironman and the swim is only 200 meter more than an Ironman. As I was doing it up I new what to expect, there will be some cooler fall days of riding and running. If it's not too cold there is something beautiful about riding in the autumn with the leaves changing colours and very few cyclists on the road.

I didn't train today, I was thinking of riding and postponed it, by the time I was ready there wasn't enough daylight to do the full ride. I should have went earlier in the day. I also figured an extra day of resting my chest couldn't hurt. Instead Alice, Alyssa and I were catching up on the series Breaking Bad. It's an awesome show and we needed to catch up to what Reid had watched.

At 11 pm it was time to pick Reid up from the movie theatre, him and his buddy Ryan went to fright night. We got there early and drove around a bit. Alice was talking about us needing to get back into a routine she needs a break, especially with school coming. I agreed, we need to get to a normal life routine. She's now mentioned that to me a couple of times, we're getting to old to keep up that pace. It's also very very important for her to have a standard routine to keep her blood sugar levels in check. The past 4 days with the preparation before the race has been really tough on her. The fact that she is a diabetic and keeps up toe to toe with me with my crazy lifestyle is amazing, he's an Iron-woman.

We were also driving around the industrial part of Burlington as we killed time. There is so many businesses that I've never heard of before, large building businesses. I saw one called Edge Imaging that I toured only a few years ago and they were in a relatively small space, now it looks like they moved to a 50,000 plus square foot facility. They do school and sports photography. Amazing. Alice was saying she thinks that when it comes to sales I can do the same thing. I'm not sure where the AG thing is going to go, I hope it works, if not I'm not too worried.

The one thing I will look at is something in the medical or healthcare field. People are getting older. As we were driving by a mall I saw essentially a gym that was set up for people with medical problems. I'd never seen that before. It was a combination of rehabilitation and physio all in a gym setting. It looked as much like a doctors office as a gym. It looked like it just opened and catered to the plus 55 years old crowd. It looked like a brilliant idea. It's the first time I've ever seen that twist. Brilliant.

Today's picture is of Heather Oravec. She ended up throwing up after she finished the beer run which means she didn't have to run an extra lap and have another beer, although it did make me feel better that it shows the run is hard. The picture is worth a thousand words.

Ouch me hurts....

It was bed at 6 am and I was up at 10:30 am. Matty and Heather were sitting on the couch as I came down and Bobby already left. Which was a little bit of a bummer, I had lots of bacon and eggs in the fridge. The other similarity to last year was the house was cleaned up. I'd love to have Matty O and Heather as kids, they are so well behaved and clean up after themselves and others

On went the coffee, the bacon, eggs and toast. I really messed up the toast, it was hard. I put it in the toaster a little too long and then I put it in the microwave to melt the butter. Matty and Heather were good sports and at it, it was definitely the loudest and crunchiest.

When I woke up this morning my left chest was killing me. I was trying to piece together what happened last night and remembered dragging Bob and Matty on the floor like they were shot and I was saving them from a foxhole. I assumed I strained it. Then Matty reminded me that I told Bobby to give me his best punch in my chest. I forgot about that and definitely realized that was probably the cause of my soreness.

I'm not going to lie, I'm very concerned about it. I remember being kicked in the chest at a 70.3 about 4 or 5 years ago and my rib got bruised and it took 6 weeks to heal. It kind of felt the exact same way and right now it's tough to take a deep breath without some major discomfort with maximum inhaling. I'm hoping that because I flexed hard before taking the bunch it's just muscle and not rib. I definitely blame myself on this one, I shouldn't have egged Bobby on. Excessive beer drinking makes you do crazy things. Last year it was the people's elbow and this year it's the heart punch. I can't win. Next year I'm wearing hockey equipment.

Hanging out with Matty and Heather it seemed just like last year, sans Leo. Leo was smart this year, he sobered up and went home last night, probably saving his marriage. He near got divorced this year and he was originally going to sleep over again. He was well behaved last night, and for the last couple hours was drinking water. Last year he got the most drunk award and I drew a moustache on his face. This year he definitely was pacing himself, no one wants to be the Christmas Party drunk two years in a row.

After breakfast, coffee and talking about the run, Matty O and Heather were off. We had a great time hanging with them. Heather was telling me how surprised she was that she was able to stay up on Friday night. It was a lot of fun hanging with them this weekend.

The official end of the House of Payne Beer Run is when I take the banner down in the morning. As Matty was packing the bikes I started taking down the banner. They pulled out of the driveway, I finished taking down the banner and it was now officially over for 2011.

My brain was mush, I sat down to write the blog and I can't believe I was able to do it. I couldn't even think straight, it took a long time to write it up. Having the pictures helped to remember some of the stuff. I also went through some of the video and made a You Tube video of the opening ceremonies and the bunnies having sex in front of the neighbours barbecue.

As much as I wanted to eat well, I knew Monday is the official day and I needed a little grease. Started with the bacon and eggs, then later in the day I had some potato salad and chips, then Alice ordered some pizza for dinner. The one upside is I only had about 3 pieces of pizza and didn't do any late night snacking. Partly because I was sleeping on the couch most of the night. The family was all in the family room and watching Kenny Powers and I couldn't keep my eyes open. I feel like hell, no sleep, too much beer and my mouth tasted like an ashtray. I had way to many cigars last night.

I was thinking of training and decided not to, I wanted to give my chest another day to heal. The last time I had this I was somewhat fine and then I went swimming and during my swim it went from discomfort to all out pain, I'm worried about that this year. I'm definitely going to be very careful. I think last time I stressed it to much to early. I also felt that had I waited a few days to train afterwards that it may have healed better.

Tonight I spent some time downloading the photo's and video's that Reid took. Unfortunately most of it was bad. The camera had the wrong setting on and all the photo's were black. Thankfully he caught it before he took the bunny video. It's too bad about the setting he had over 400 shots. Doru ended up sending some photo's and videos and passed along a link that I posted at the end of  yesterdays' race report. I then started editing the shots and getting things ready to put together the 2011 House of Payne Beer Run Video Montage.

I still remained in my clothes from yesterday all day today. I was too lazy to even have a shower or change. I woke up in my costume from yesterday and wore it all day. I can hardly wait to get my body detoxed and my head clear. I'm really looking forward to seeing if I can have a normal life for the next 2 months.

Alice was tired today as well. In many ways she has more staying power than me even though she says she doesn't know if she could keep up. Not only is she there with me, taking care of me, she's also diabetic. That's not easy. Late nights and partying makes managing blood sugar levels even more difficult.

As always, this year we had the Beer Run on the perfect day, weather was awesome. Today it was grey, windy and a little cooler. Overall I was super happy with the beer run, only two minor mishaps, I couldn't find my bull horn and the camera was on the wrong settings and we didn't get the video I was hoping for. With all the other photos taken it was no big deal.

4th Annual House of Payne Beer Run...

I was so looking forward to this day to come. For me, my beer run is my personal little super bowl. Especially this year, I definitely raised the bar. I got a new banner, a major league trophy cup and had some professional voice over work done for the opening ceremonies and it was now also going to be a costume race.

I was more prepared this year and more pumped than I can ever remember being. The best was also the turnout we were going to have, it was a record number of people at 17. It felt good waking up and not hurting like I did last year, even though I still went to bed at 4 am last night.

The moment I woke up the sun was shining and it was beautiful weather, it was warm and near no wind. I was so excited to get things set up, I really shouldn't have even been on the ladder putting up the sign, I was so giddy I'm surprised I didn't fall of.

The set up went really smooth, couldn't have went smoother. I know what needs to be done and Alice knows what needs to be done. It was a perfect set up and pre-race relaxed pace. Barb came over earlier to help out and with most everything done everyone was able to just hang out and chat and it was a great way to ease into the race.

As people started to show up, near everyone was wearing a costume. It wasn't mandatory and I wasn't sure how many people were going to get in the spirit of wearing a costume. I was really surprised to see that most everyone had some sort of a costume. There is definitely something about wearing a costume that brings out the craziness in people. I love it.

Some of the costumes were amazing. There was a prize for best costume as selected by the volunteers, I was glad I didn't have to make the call, it would have been a tough one. The costumes that really stood out to me was John Barclay as Osama Bin Laden with a shooting target on his chest, Matty O as a baby in full diapers and John and Fran Proc as Bunny Rabbits. I have no idea how that ran in those costumes, they are hot to begin with and it was also a hot day. All the other costumes were good as well, if anything I took the heat for having a lame costume. I guess next year I'm going to have to up the bar on the costume.

For this years opening ceremony I upped the bar. On fiverr.com I paid a radio guy to do an announcers voice and I paid another guy to do a voice over of Beavis and Butthead as our honorary chairperson for this years run, and I paid another guy to do a joke recording of the U.S. and Canadian National Anthems. I then stringed them all together as a playlist and burnt them to a CD and played the CD on the boom box. It was a major hit and soon to be a tradition, I'm going to have a new honorary house of payne beer run chairman every year.

I thought it was a great opening cermemony and by the look on every one's face they enjoyed it. Hearing Beavis and Butthead go over the rules and the gag national anthems went over well. It couldn't have gone better, it was perfect lead up to the race. The opening ceremonies with the announcer, the rules review by the honorary chairman and national athems took just over six minutes, anything less would be uncivilized for such a world class event. Looking at everyone faces, it was a hit.

The race was your typical House of Payne Beer run, it sounds a lot easier and more fun than it is. It's not easy drinking 6 beers and running 5 km's. This year I decided to pick 25 minutes as my time, it's a little slower than I normally run and figured it would give me some time to drink my beer a little slower and run a little slower if I wasn't feeling it. Turns out I had another consistent run, I finished in 24:14 and broke the 6 beers / 5 KM course record, it was previously held by Hernan Bancalari, he did a 24:49.

I was actually surprised that I ran so fast this year, it didn't feel that hard, I started feeling stronger as the day went on, my previous times were, 2008 - 25:10,  2009 - 25:25, 2010 - 25:44 and this year it was 24:14. I PB'd by near a minute and ran an average 7:48 per mile pace, not bad for 5 km and 6 beers. I don't get it the speed though. I'm a little heavier than any of the previous years runs.

The biggest surprise for me this year was Al Nolan, last year he was 250 lbs and ran a 41:11. This year he's 214 lbs and ran a 27:30. I couldn't believe how fast he was running, I couldn't shake him, he blew my mind. The other one's that blew my mind was John and Fran Proc running in bunny outfits, I cannot believe they didn't pass out. I put one of the bunny suits on for only 10 minutes and was walking in it and thought I was going to die. I'm glad they won best costume, they deserved it on so many levels.

I had an awesome time during the run, I love running by the guys and high fiving. I love the spirit of the House of Payne Beer Run and seeing everyone as they come in and congratulate them on their finish. It is the time that the noise level starts going up and the energy is amazing. Everyone is just chatting it up like they are long lost brothers. Tons and tons of laughter. It's been year four and every year is exactly the same, it has never wavered. To me it is the funnest part of the run, the commiserating afterwards.

This year I had things on a tight schedule. I knew Al, Justin and Hany had to leave by 3 pm and I wanted to make sure I got the food and awards done before then. The timing was perfect, I got it all done. I was excited to see who won, I was in the dark like everyone else. I let Alice and the kids determine the winner and Reid made the announcement. I was so wanting to win, I've always been in the top three every year and I really wanted to get my name on the Cup. My dream came true, I won, I was off by 46 seconds. I predicted 25 minutes and finished in 24:14. I don't think I've ever been more happy than when I heard my name announced as the winner. John Barclay came in second and Bob Lynch came in third.

Once the official House of Payne race was over, people fed and awards over, it was time to hang out and chill. It was a lot of fun, tons and tons of laughs. John Proc came up with a great idea. Our neighbours were having a pool party, it looked like it was for a boys sport team or church or something and he or me came, I can't remember, came up with the idea to jump the fence and hop over to the area where they are having their pool party and act like happy bunnies and then when they least expect it start having sex in the bunny outfits. And that's what we did. We got dress up, jumped the fence and hopped over and played in front of them, they were all laughing and then I went down on John's bunny suit like I was giving him a blow job. You could hear a pin drop at the pool party. They were laughing and then when I did that it came to radio silence. Across the field at my house all we could hear was laughter from everyone. We then hopped away.

The thing is that the guy who lives in the house who was hosting the pool party is a cop. Him and I have never formally met and we don't have the best of relationships. He sees me drinking beer, playing music and one night I think we woke him up as we were howling to the moon at 4 am. He opened his window and told us to shut up, which we did. That's basically been the extent of our relationship. He's also got a short fuse, I see it with his kids, it's not uncommon to hear him yelling at the kids, especially a couple years ago. I think he may have taken some anger management courses, he's a little more mellow right now.

Had John Barclay not seen the cop who lives behind me this week and told him that he was coming to my house for a beer run and we did the bunny thing in front of his house, I'm sure he would have jumped the fence and beat the shit out of us. In a way, it's too bad, I would have loved to have had video of two bunnies getting their asses kicked on YouTube. Needless to say I had Reid video record us do our bunny mayhem. Apparently while John and I was doing the bunny thing, Al was beating on Doru on the trampoline, then Matty O jumped in to help Doru and put Al in some hold that Al was pretty much not surrendering and wasn't going to tap, I'm told he looked like he was going to pass out rather than give up and just before he did Bob jumped in to his rescue. When we were hoping over to the property I saw the guys on the trampoline, I was surprised, I knew Matty O with an Ironman a couple weeks away did not want to do the trampoline again this year.

When I got back Al suggested I go over to the cops house with John and introduce myself and invite him over. John wasn't too keen on that one. Instead, after Al left and the party at the cops house was over, I walked over to his house with a big beer glass and cigar in hand and took a deep breath and knocked on his front door. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, beer makes you do stupid things.

The door opened and it was him, I can't remember what I said, the spirit of it was positive, along the lines of "hey I'm your neighbour, hope we didn't offend you and we've never met and you're welcome to come on over for some beer and cigars". He was very gracious and said he thought it was funny and it was no big deal and he had to go pick up his kids. I just remember somehow being in his house and hallway area, I don't know how I got there. I was also amazed how short the guy was, he looked much taller from across the back of the field. He seemed like a mouse type of a guy not a tough guy. He seemed like a nice guy and seemed a little uncomfortable. I said, no big deal, but don't hesitate to stop by for a beer and cigar, then left on my way. Whew, that couldn't have gone any better. It could have gone real bad. I'm glad I did do it, at least it smoothed everything over. I'm sure John will hear about it at work.

Al was supposed to leave at 3 pm. He ended up leaving around 4 pm. He was late for his own party, he was the host and chief barbecuer for his kids hockey team. When he left he looked gassed and they guys were telling me after that his watermelon head was skin burnt from the trampoline along with Doru's knee.

This year was relatively tame compared to last year. It was no better, no worse, just not as insane. The beer bong didn't make an appearance this year, when it does, it's all bad. We did have the Das Boot this year, that was a hit. Al was able to do a border run pick it up for me last night from Buffalo last night and brought it to the run. It was great having it at the end and running the victory lap with a 3 litre glass boot of beer. It's the exact same boot as from the movie Beerfest.

We had tons of food this year, I probably cooked about 15 to many hamburgers and hot dogs. We had tons of wings and they came out later at night. I think the wings were the only way to get John Barclay off the pinball machine. I'm not convinced John came to see if I needed help setting things up yesterday, I really believe it was an excuse for him to come over and play pinball. Heather was getting into the pinball as well. They looked like two teenagers.

I did not care how much food I ate or beer I drank, this was my last hurrah. Tomorrow is a new day. When Alice brought the wings out later in the evening I didn't stop eating them, they were awesome. As it got darker it got down to a core group, Matty, Heather, Bob, Me, Alice, John, Heather Barclay and my neighbours Jeff and Rebecca.

I can't remember much, I had a lot to drink. I just remember it is typical, lots of laughing. I did remember telling everyone I hired an Indian virtual assistant and to expect a phone call at 4 am from my assistant, I'm going to name him poochie, after my first dog. I think people think I'm joking.

Then it got down to Bob, Matty and myself hanging around the bar and having sometimes fun, sometimes stupid and sometimes serious conversation. The music that came to my ears was when I heard the Kegerator spew foam, we drained it. I may have lasted a little longer but Doru poured himself a glass earlier in the night and didn't turn it off. Alice came in the room and the beer was pouring out of the kegerator and on to the floor. When she came outside and said someone left the kegerator running I thought she was joking.

After the keg was drained we started drinking the Amstel and the Coors light cans. I was happy about that too, I wanted to get rid of all my beer to remove as much temptation as possible. Between Bob, Matty and myself we can pound down the beers. The funniest is when I saw that Bob was smoking a cigar with the cedar wrapper still on, he had no idea. It gave me good material to bug him with for the next 10 minutes. "Hey I'm Bob Lynch, do you have any aluminum cigar tubes you'd like me to smoke".

We then had some deeper conversations about life and death stuff. Eventually it led to me pretending we were in a foxhole. I had the guys sit beside me on the bar rail. Bob kept putting his head up and getting it shot at, then I dragged Matty and Bob across the basement floor. They were lying down, I grabbed Matty with my left hand and Bobby with my right hand and started dragging them. It was a battlefield simulation, showing that I could be a hero based on needing them to do the hard work at our Chickafila restaurant. Long story to explain the Chickafila deal. Lets just say if they died I'd have to do real work.

It was fun, definitely had it's ebbs and flows and covered all emotional grounds. At one point I told Bobby to punch me as hard as he could in my chest, I guess I wanted to show him a sales guy could be strong too. He did and it was one loud thud. I was impressed myself that I could take it. Tomorrow I'm sure I'll be paying the price for the dragging close to 400 lbs of guys along my basement floor and taking a major heart punch. Drinking too much beer can be hazardous to your health.

I'm actually looking forward to the next two months and trying to live life like a normal person. I've done it in the past, primarily those 7 years that I didn't drink in my 20's. I'm starting to think I need to be more careful, I'm often too trusting and put myself in situations that could potentially go side ways which could put myself in peril. I don't want to be on that TV show 48 hours about being killed.

My biggest problem is I'm way to trusting and naive with people. I assume all people are good and have similar belief systems to me. That's major flawed logic on my part, I'm starting to learn that and up until now it hasn't caused me any major harm, I just don't want my luck to run out. I need to be smarter and see things for what they are, not what I hope or want them to be. Bob was even telling me that because he didn't know Al or Al when we stayed at his house, he had an exit strategy with a cop neighbour on call to throw our asses out of there if we were trouble. My aunt did the same thing when she came to visit, she figured if it went bad, she had someone in the wings to get her out of my house and to stay with. All new concepts to me.

Bobby ended up going to bed and Alice, Matty and I stayed up until around 6 am talking. I couldn't believe it when I saw 6 am. The only thing that can get me to bed is morning.

Miha also took some great shots and posted them to  https://picasaweb.google.com/112107413356051043361/HouseOfPayne5KMBeerRun?authkey=Gv1sRgCJePoorP-J31gwE

The final countdown...

I woke up and felt like crap this morning, I'm definitely burning the candle on both ends once again. It seems that every night this past week as been late and beer has been involved and I've woken up with a mild hangover or a little shaky.

This morning was no different. I wished I could just sleep for an extra 4 or 5 hours and catch up. Today was final touches on the House of Payne Beer Run organizing. First I had to get the House of Payne Beer Cup. When I got there I told the owner the history that I found out about the cup, he then told me that if I want to know more history about the cup to check out the website of RS Owens in Chicago, which I later did. They are big time trophy makers, they make the Oscars for the Academy Awards. It turns out he was right, they are the only guys that make the cup and on the website they will sell me the exact same trophy for $1200. It was definitely a major score.

Next stop was Canadian Tire Milton to pick up tables from Jamie's store. I got there and bumped into Gary the manager and he knew exactly what I was there for, it was impressive. It was 5 star service, the only way I could keep up with the guys pace was if I did a light jog. When I went to pay, it was free as per Jamie. I got the rock star treatment. Thanks Mr. Grant.

When I got home the first thing I did was start to polish the trophy, it started coming to life and looking amazing. I can't tell you the last time I ever polished anything. I don't think there ever was a last time. Alice and the kids got a kick out of seeing me work. As I was working I was communicating with Matty O, he was at the P.O. Box place and picking up my packages, looks like everything arrived but Das Boot. Then it arrived around 2 hours later. Thanks for Mr Al (the watermelon sized head) Nolan, he did me a huge favour and crossed the border and picked it up. Now, everything but one item, which was not a super big deal arrived. I love when a plan comes together.

Just as I finished polishing my trophy the door bell rang and it was Matty and Heather. Perfect timing. I checked out the banner they picked up, looks awesome. Within about 30 minutes we were on the road for a 3 hour bike ride as part of their Ironman training program. About 30 minutes into the ride we hooked up with Shaw.

As we rode I looked at Shaw and something looked different, his shoulders looked huge. Turns out that in a couple of months he went from 156 lbs to 179 lbs and was doing 200 push ups a day with a buddy at work. He hadn't weighed himself and when he did he was like, "whoa, time to stop the push ups". Shaw as also feeling blue, it seems he's burnt out on the cycling and is at a turning point and doesn't know what he wants to do next. He was cycling like 6 days a week, was racing and now it's no longer fun. Triathlons are potentially on the horizon for him. I felt for him, I could see the pain, anguish and burnout, he wasn't his happy go lucky self. I've been there, I couldn't imagine training for just one sport.

The ride was exactly what I needed. I feel like I'm getting fat and out of shape and the fact that I had no choice but to do the 3 hours without turning back helped to kick start those old feelings of athleticism. It's amazing that I haven't not been training, but not training near as much in the last 10 days and I feel like crap and feel my body slipping. Exercise is such a zero sum game, if you don't keep it up you lose it fast.  I can't stress how good this ride was for me on so many levels. The pace was nice too, nice and slow and the conversation was nice, there is no better way to socialize than on a bike ride.

When we finished the ride we did a quick 20 minute brick run, I really didn't want to do it and that's why I did it. As I ran I felt so fat. Again, just what the doctor ordered. I guess I've been running loose knowing that after the beer run it's time to get on the straight and narrow and train like I've never trainined for the World Championships. This weekend is my last hurrah.

I must say that Matty O and Heather look like they are in amazing shape and there is definitely no meat on the bone with either of them. They look like big time pro triathletes.

After the run it was off for dinner at the Symposium for some good food and good conversation and then back to the Pig & Whistle to catch up. I really wanted to get to bed early and not drink too much, last year I did and payed the price for the run. The night of the run I was out on the floor, taped out before midnight as we watched the UFC and setting up the course and running was totally painful. I didn't want to repeat that, I wanted to enjoy the day.

So much for best laid plans, I got to bed at 4 am and Matty, Alice, Heather and Reid were still up and talking. I was tapped out once again. I'm more focused on having energy for this beer run than when I do an Ironman, I swear.

I also found out why the peoples elbow is so dangerous. It turns out that Matty has a bump of some sort on his elbow, it's like the french tickler of elbows, he gets you with the elbow and then glides the bump into it. He was showing me how he broke his elbow and can't extend his arms the same. He looked so Gay I had to take a picture. Reid was showing off is new shoes today, he went old school with the Converse and thinks I should wear them for work. Definitely not my style.

Earlier in the day Reid mentioned the doorbell rang and he didn't get to it in time, it was John Barclay. He emailed that he stopped by to see if I needed any help with the beer run. The one thing I can say about John, he's one hell of a great guy and a great friend.

On the work front, I ended up pulling the trigger and hiring my Indian Virtual Assistant. I'm really curious to see how this works out. It's like getting a kid to do you're homework, I love that idea. Why work hard when you can be lazy and smart.

Long Bike - 3:15:09 / 86.11 km / 26.48 kph avg
Brick Run - 20:25 / 3.83 km / 5:19 avg pace

That's the WOW FACTOR!!!!

If you've ever watched the TV Series storage wars you'll get this. I got the trophy from the antique shop in Vegas sent to me. The shop is right down the street from the Pawn Stars shop. I tried to fix the base on it last night and thought I might need a trophy rod and this morning took it to a trophy shop in Hamilton.

The guy at the shop told me it doesn't need a rod, just some wood glue. I then asked him how much he thought the trophy was worth. Without hesitation he said "at least $1000 for the cup alone, there's only one place in the U.S., which is in Chicago, that does that style of cup". He said it is the real deal. A couple of the other customers were there and when I said I paid $75 everyone thought we were in a Storage Wars personal twilight zone episode. I was so pumped, the House of Payne Cup is worth over $1000. I knew it was valuable when I saw it.

Later tonight I also found out where the trophy came from, on the back of the trophy plate it said 1994 Oregon Match Play, Men's Champion. I googled it and it was awarded to Anthony Kang, who ended up turning pro on the PGA tour in 1996 and has since won over $1,000,000 in prize money. Looks like the House of Payne Championship Cup has some history. Now I wonder if it was stolen, lost or given away. I'll tell you one thing, Tony ain't getting it back.

At 11 am this morning I had a phone call with a well known and successful company out of India that provides companies with virtual assistants. I need to get off my ass on the Caricature Toon business. I put a lot of money into the software and it's more than paid for itself with some tax breaks however without focusing on Triathlons solely and doing a generic Caricature Toons site I'm sure it can make me a few grand a month. The problem is it's too unsexy and mundane and not a huge bang for the buck for me to focus 4 hours a day on. I'm best as a boss or in sales, not a worker bee.

The virtual assistants in India are all university grads, they have the expertise in all things Internet and can do everything I need them to do, essentially they are my first employee. After talking to the guy and watching the video testimonials at www.taskseveryday.com  I decided to sign up. It's only 7 dollars and hour and I'll try them for a couple of month and see what they can do and I can stop it at anytime. The guy I spoke to from India had decent english and he said the others will too. They also make sure that this person works on North American time. If they work 4 hours a day. They will work from 1 pm - 5 pm my time so I can get a hold of them easily. This is pretty cool, I've heard about virtual assistants for the past couple of years. If it works this will be great.

Today my back was getting sore, too much stress over the beer run. I had to pick up $381 worth of food from Costco. I went for lunch with John Johnson from Fuji, he's a photo book competitor and friend, we refer to ourselves as co-opetition. We got together for lunch to chat, update each other on how business was going and how stupidly low the margins are in photo books and most importantly he made the House of Payne Ceramic Award mugs. He ended up giving me a great deal....FREE.....I did pick up lunch though.

Some of my other surprises arrived today, it looks like everything may work out and I may get everything we need in time for the beer run. That would be awesome. As much as I'm looking forward to the run I'm looking forward to it being over, I've been drinking every night this week and feeling like shit the next morning. and the worst part is I'm not training much, it's a weeks break for me of sorts. I can hardly wait till it's over and I can get into the groove and train for the World Championships. I figure I better get my boozing in now because I won't be boozing until after the Race. I plan on being on the wagon for 2 months to help me lose 20 lbs afterwards.

Alice and the kids were bugging me that I'm obsessed with this beer run. They said they don't see people spend as much time planning weddings. To me it's fun, however even I'm feeling I'm going a little over the top on focus of time. I even started to write down a step by step itinerary and job description for each of the volunteers. Like I say it's gotten out of hand.

In terms of beer, the Kegerator now has the fresh keg in it. I tapped the old one out earlier today. I did learn something interesting. Even though I had to move the full Keg from the storage fridge to the kegerator and hook it up, it didn't need time to settle. It was pouring perfectly right away. The movement of the keg didn't cause it to foam. I wondered if it was from the short distance to travel or that it was dam cold. Either way, it's a win.

Tonight was another late night, I was having beers and watching Nick fix the pinball machine. He came over to put on a new ramp. My machine is so complex and compacted on the playing field that to chance  the ramp was incredibly tough. Open heart surgery is definitely easier. When Nick pulled out the ramp unit it looked like a human heart with all the wires and stuff hanging off it. Even Nick said it was the most complex ramp he had ever worked on.

He figured it would take him a couple of hours and it was going to cost me $100, he was here for about 5 hours. Thanks god he still only charged me $5 and two glasses of beer. It was fascinating watching him work and appreciating all the components that go into a pinball machine. He was telling me that pinpall is starting to make a comeback in the last 2 years especially with people getting them for in home, although he'd like to see it also in public places. He also mentioned that the 1990's machines are well sought after, the Williams and Bally's, as that was the modern golden age of pinball. All the more reason I'm going to keep mine. However, after watching Nick work and seeing all the stuff that he has to deal with to keep the machine working properly, I wondered if getting a new machine would be better. I think he ended up leaving around 1 am.

After he left I played some more, the game is working great, except Nick noticed one of the bummers had a broken part and he didn't have the parts to fix it. It's minor, most wouldn't even notice it. To change out the part it's another surgery job. Nick said that the old time operators that would have own this machine would have hated fixing it because it's so dense with electronics. The machine was originally designed to be a wide body and then they had to re-design the same game into a regular body, hence so much in so little space.

No Training - Feeling fat and bloated.
